Strange, isn’t it, how our vocabulary has been expanding of late. Up until late 2001, the term “Twin Towers” meant either the combination of the Federal Budgetary Deficit and the National Debt or the two outstanding forwards of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs. Suddenly, the only relevant meaning was the two destroyed buildings in New York City. As people race by on Interstate 15 through the southwestern portion of Utah, they miss many relics of early silver mining and agricultural days hidden just off the freeway. Washington County had a rich mining and farming history dating back to Civil War times, and there are some that believe it still holds some hope for future mining.
Silver’s Shine is Back
As a precious metal, silver doesn’t have the allure of gold. As an investment, it’s not as hip as Google. But dowdy old silver is suddenly chic. Silver prices are at their highest in more than 25 years, and mining companies are riding an economic boom.

Gold in New Zealand
In 1965, I visited New Zealand and saw a South Island goldfield. I knew very little about gold at that time and stopped only long enough to peruse a few relics and old photos on the pub wall.

Representative Paul Shepherd stopped by, and Idaho County Commissioner Jim Chmelik dove with one of the dredgers so he could see for himself that no harm was being done to fish or their habitat.
Have We Hit 'Peak Gold'?
According to some experts, after the peak is reached, the production rate will slowly decline until it reaches near zero while the price shoots upward. At that point, we will have pretty much mined all the economic ore deposits that are present on the planet.
