Putting it all together, I believe 2009 could be the year for a major move upward in both gold and silver, the two monetary precious metals. However, given the potential for an abrupt abridgement of any economic recovery, I am less optimistic for platinum, our third precious metal. Exactly one month ago—to the day—I was watching in stunned silence, along with billions of others around the world, as the immense tragedy of September 11 played itself out. Since that time, the President has issued a virtual declaration of war; actual attacks against the Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan have begun and the “other side” has threatened an escalation of terror.
US Mining Industry Outlook Brighter
Smaller exploration and development companies, many of which were international, were driven out of the US during the Clinton era and are now looking for signs that it’s safe to come back. Policy changes, rising metal prices, a weakened dollar and a more positive hiring forecast may be the most attractive set of signs the industry has seen in years.
