The capital city, Chihuahua (pop. 2 million), is 228 miles, by divided highway, south of El Paso, Texas. Topographically, the state can be divided into several provinces, from dry sandy deserts on the north and east, to the forested Sierra Madre Occidental on the west and southwest.
